Study Abroad & Exchange announces fall 2019 scholarship winners

Alex Duffy (BSM ’21) and Chandler Nguyen (BSM '21) have been named fall 2019 recipients of the Freeman Travel Abroad Award (FTAA). Established in 2018 by the Freeman School’s Office of Study Abroad & Exchange, the scholarship program offers financial assistance to students participating in Freeman study abroad programs.

Alex Duffy

Duffy, an Altman Scholar majoring in finance and international development, is spending the semester in Bogota, Colombia, at Universidad de Los Andes, where she plans to take most of her coursework in Spanish.

"My major in international development has taught me how the increasingly globalized world affects human development, and my business classes have given me an analytical perspective through which to view global development issues and international political affairs," Duffy wrote in her application for the award. "In my semester in Colombia, I wish to delve into my interest in emerging markets and development finance to bridge the gap between the duality of my current professional interests."

Chandler Nguyen

Nguyen, a double major in finance and legal studies in business, is spending the semester in Paris at Sciences Po, one of the world's top three universities for politics and international relations.

“Living and studying abroad in Paris has always been a dream of mine,” wrote Nguyen in her application. “It seems surreal to me to be able to learn from professors from such diverse backgrounds and sit among students with backgrounds and experiences entirely unusual from my own. I am confident that the courses I take abroad will inspire me to learn more about the law and finance fields that I am passionate about, and I cannot wait to develop as a person and student outside of my comfort zone.”
