Commencement ceremony celebrates a return to normalcy

This year’s Freeman School commencement ceremony was nothing special, and according to Dean Angelo DeNisi, that’s what made it special indeed.

Burkenroad Conference spotlights recovery

At last year’s Burkenroad Reports Investment Conference, 33 of the 34 companies that presented posted negative returns for the preceding 12 months. This year, 28 of 33 companies posted positive returns, including top performer Stone Energy, which generated a total return of 337.89 percent for the year.

Wilson family, Hall-Trujillo to be honored as Entrepreneurs of the Year

The Freeman School will honor the Wilson family, owners of Barriere Construction Co., as Tulane Distinguished Entrepreneurs of the Year and Kathryn Hall-Trujillo, founding director of Birthing Project USA, as Tulane Social Entrepreneur of the Year at the 2010 Tulane Council of Entrepreneurs Awards Gala.

The gala, which also will feature the announcement of the winner of this year's Tulane Business Plan Competition, takes place at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 16, at the Westin New Orleans at Canal Place.

The developer of an orthopedic implant to help patients with osteoporosis undergo spinal surgery, a social enterprise to provide clean, affordable off-grid lighting to rural poor in the developing world, and the maker of a line of small wind turbines designed to make wind power cost competitive with electricity generated from non-renewable resources have been selected as the three finalists in this year's Tulane Business Plan Competition.

Jack and Jake’s Local and Organic Market is a new business that plans to bring locally grown food to customers in underserved neighborhoods within three days of harvest, but to achieve that goal, the company first needs a top-notch distribution system.
